Two Beautiful Reflections

In December of 2016, the Philanthropiece Scholars went on a Tour de Guatemala. Over the week long trip they traveled almost from coast to coast, visiting Mayan archeological sites along the way as well as other cultural destinations. The group visited Livingston, an Afro-Caribbean (Garifuna) village on the East coast of Guatemala, got to know the team of Asociación Ak’Tenamit, an influential NGO founded in 1992 that focuses on sustainable development and education in over 30 Maya-Q’eqchi’ communities, and immersed themselves in both the challenges and dreams of their rich Mayan culture.

We are so pleased to share two beautiful reflections written by Mary Carmen and Lidia, both outstanding Philanthropiece Scholars in Chajul (Quiche), that detail their experience organizing and participating in this trip. These reflections, written as a “despedida” (a farewell) of 2016 and a welcoming of 2017, remind us to appreciate the amazing natural and cultural beauty that surrounds us, to never stop being curious about what we have and where we come from, and to always strive to get out of our comfort zone. Thank you Mary Carmen and Lidia for always inspiring us.

En diciembre del 2016 los Becarios de Filantropis salieron de Gira por Guatemala. Durante el viaje de una semana viajaron casi de costa a costa, visitando ruinas mayas y otros destinos culturales como:

• Livingston, una comunidad Afro-Caribeña o Garifuna en la costa este de Guatemala
• Asociación Ak’Tenamit, una ONG importante fundada en 1992 que se enfoca en el desarrollo sustentable y educación de más de 30 comunidades maya-q’eqchi’
• Y una organización en Ciudad de Guatemala que está trabajando en desvelar las atrocidades ocurridas durante la Guerra Civil de casi 40 años y enjuiciar a los responsables

Quisimos compartir con ustedes unas reflexiones impactantes de dos Becarias extraordinarias, Mary Carmen y Lidia, que detallan sus experiencias organizando y participando en el viaje. Estas reflexiones, escritas como cartas de despedida del 2016 y un bienvenido al 2017, nos recuerdan a apreciar las maravillas naturales y culturales que nos rodean, a nunca dejar de ser curiosos sobre lo que tenemos y de dónde venimos, y a siempre esforzarnos a salir de nuestra zona de confort. Letter from Mary Carmen about the tour preparations Carta de Mary Carmen sobre las preparaciones para la gira:

Quiero informarles sobre la investigación de la pre-gira educativa, estoy muy impresionada de haber llegado a visitar muchos lugares aprendí cosas diferentes como: Comer sushi, entrar en un elevador, subir en lancha, conocer museos de paleontología y de chocolate  y lo más importante fue el poder interactuar con otras personas diferentes como: Negociar con los encargados de la Asociación AK’ TENAMIT, otros encargadas de restaurantes, hoteles centros históricos.

I want to tell you about the pre educational tour research that I have been doing. I am very moved from having visited so many places and from experiencing so many different things like: eating sushi, getting into an elevator, getting on a speedboat, visiting the paleontology and chocolate museums. The most important part was getting the chance to interact with different people whether it was negotiating with the managers of Asociación AK TENAMIT, or the managers of the restaurants, hotels and historic centers.

Fue una experiencia única, llena de aprendizaje estas actividades que nos está proporcionando Filantropis es un complemento más de cómo ser agentes de cambio, no puedo cuantificar lo que aprendí pero sí hay cambios de aprendizaje cualitativa porque aprendí cosas diferentes e interesantes.

It was a one of a kind experience, a complete learning experience. These activities that Filantropis is providing us are yet another complement to forming us as changemakers. I cannot quantify what I have learned, but learning new and interesting things involved a marked qualitative change.

Para mis compañeros becarios les va ayudar mucho porque aquí en Chajul estamos muy encerrados en nuestra zona de confort que no nos damos cuenta de lo que pasa a nuestro alrededor y la salida que tenemos programada en diciembre nos va a complementar los conocimientos y experiencias para ser mucho más competitivo y tener ese valor agregado de conocer y aprender de otras personas diferentes.

This trip will help my fellow scholars very much because here in Chajul we are very closed off in our comfort zones and we aren’t aware of what is happening around us. The trip we have planned for December will complement our knowledge and experiences so that we are more competitive and have the added value of meeting and learning from new people.

También tenemos una propuesta de poder presentar la Asociación Filantropis en un café de Antigua porque cada semana tienen actividades de presentación de organizaciones y esto es una oportunidad que hay que aprovechar, pero lo hablaremos porque aun no lo tenemos bien planificado.

We were even offered an opportunity to make a presentation about la Asociación Filantropis at a café in Antigua at their weekly community event. We anticipate taking advantage of this opportunity.

Estoy muy agradecida a todos por haberme dado esta oportunidad porque cada vez más Filantropis me ayuda a aprender y explorar cosas diferentes eso es un complemento más para ampliar mis conocimientos y puedo asegurar que para mis compañeros también les va ayudar a tener una mente más abierta y el poder razonar críticamente. Y disculpen por haber robado  de sus valioso tiempo, pero sí quieren saber información mucha más específica lo pueden preguntar. Saludos cordiales!

I am very grateful to everyone for giving me this opportunity because Filantropis is continuously helping me learn and explore new things, allowing me to broaden my knowledge. Saludos cordiales al equipo Philanthropiece Colorado y Guatemala,                                  

Les escribo gustosamente con el objetivo primordial de agradecerles por el apoyo que han brindado en el transcurso del año 2016 ya que estamos a pocas horas de concluir este año, un año que nos ha permitido progresar y cumplir nuestro objetivos superando retos y todas las adversidades que se nos han presentado en el camino.

Hello to the Philanthropiece team in Colorado and Guatemala,

I write to you enthusiastically with the intention of thanking you for the support you have provided us throughout 2016 especially since we are now hours away from its conclusion, a year that has allowed us to develop and accomplish our goals while overcoming the obstacles and adversities that have presented themselves to us along the way.

Durante este tiempo de convivencia en Filantropis me he sentido muy dichosa de poder ser parte de la familia Filantropis, ya que ha sido un cimiento para mi desarrollo profesional y personal. Empezamos un año más de aprendizaje y arduo trabajo, de esta forma es como podremos contribuir día a día para un mundo mejor, demostrando el potencial de ser un verdadero agente de Cambio. Espero que los objetivos que nos hemos trazado para este nuevo año 2017, puedan ser alcanzados y que podamos aprender cada día en beneficio de otras generaciones.

During this time of building community in Filantropis I have felt very blessed to be part of the Filantropis family, seeing as it has been the foundation of my professional and personal development. We begin another year of learning and arduous work, through which we can contribute one day at a time to the making of a better world while exemplifying the potential of a true changemaker. I hope that the goals that we have laid out for ourselves for this new year, 2017, can be achieved and that we can continue to learn every day for the benefit of future generations.

 

Aprovechando esta oportunidad; también agradezco todos los beneficios recibidos: (capacitaciones, tutorías, giras, emprendimiento) y todo lo que pude recibir durante el año 2016, deteniendome más a fondo en la gira realizada en Izabala parte de ser un momento de convivencia y diversión también fue un momento de mucho aprendizaje porque nos ha permitido conocer las reliquias que nos rodean, aprender de otras culturas, tener presente nuestra historia y más que todo explorar otros lugares y salir de nuestra zona de confort, muchas veces desconocemos las muchas cosas que tenemos en Guatemala y esta gira nos ha despertado el deseo de ser más curiosos en aprender y conocer las cosos que nos ayudan a saber lo que tenemos y lo que somos. Gracias a todo los que hicieron posible esta gira, a Philanthropiece por permitirnos gozar de este gran beneficio ya que más que gasto es una gran inversión en cada jóven con grandes anhelos y deseos de actuar como agente de cambio en Chajul.

Taking advantage of this opportunity I would also like to give thanks for all of the benefits I have received: trainings, mentorship, tours, entrepreneurship and everything else I was able to receive in 2016. Delving deeper into the tour we took of Izabal, apart from being a time of building community and of fun, it was also an incredible learning experience that made it possible for us to visit the relics that surround us, learn from other cultures, acknowledge our history and, above all, explore other places and get out of our comfort zone. We are often unaware of all of the things that we have in Guatemala and this tour has awoken our desire to be more curious to learn about and visit places that help us understand what we have and who we are. Thank you to everyone that made this trip possible. Thank you to Philanthropiece for giving us the opportunity to revel in this amazing gift that is more than just an expense but in fact a great investment in each young person with a strong and willing ambition to be a changemaker in Chajul.
