HEALTH EQUITY LEARNING SERIES “Violence Against Indigenous Womxn”
May 8, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
FREEWe invite you to join us for a pre-recorded talk by Taté Walker and facilitated community conversation about sexism and health equity. Taté Walker is Lakota and a citizen of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. They are a banner-waving Two Spirit feminist and Indigenous rights activist, and a published and award-winning storyteller
Indigenous womxn face extreme marginalization at the crossroads of sex, gender and race, which is tied to and intensified by the history and ongoing impact of colonialism. The U.S. murder rate of Indigenous womxn is up to 10 times the national average; 1 in 3 Indigenous womxn will be sexually assaulted; and domestic violence rates are 7 times higher for Indigenous womxn. Philanthropiece believes it is important to educate oneself about the inequities in our community in order to confront them.
Come learn more about the health inequities faced by Indigenous womxn in particular, and how sexism is a key health equity issue overall.
