A Pilgrimage to Sand Creek 5.0

May 25, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

As an integral part of the Philanthropiece Foundation’s focus on indigenous rights, we are committed to learning about the history that we were not taught in school – and that has intentionally been wiped from our collective knowledge. This experience, the Pilgrimage to Sand Creek 5.0, provides an excellent avenue for us to grow our understanding and to deepen our action. Historian Marrty Dormish invites us to join him for his annual trip to Sand Creek National Historic Site in Eastern Colorado. The following blurb about the event is copied from his website, Everyday Epics:

The National Park Service’s website describes what took place at Sand Creek on Nov. 29, 1864, as eight hours:

“…that changed the Great Plains forever…The Sand Creek Massacre: profound, symbolic, spiritual, controversial, a site unlike any other in America. As 675 cavalrymen came around a prairie bend, the camps of Chiefs Black Kettle, White Antelope, and Left Hand lay in the valley before them…”

“A Pilgrimage to Sand Creek” takes you back in time to a formative event in the history of Colorado and the American West, introduces you to a cast of colorful and controversial characters, and allows you to wrestle with the tragic inheritance of ideas like “manifest destiny.”  It is an experience of reflection, discussion and lament around questions of identity, faith and, especially, justice.

Historian Marrty Dormish writes about the underside of American history and people who’ve been marginalized or forgotten for various reasons. invites you to join him for his annual trip to Sand Creek National Historic Site in Eastern Colorado.
